1.1 Background of the Study
Bagwai Local Government Area (LGA) in Kano State is home to several fishermen communities that depend on fishing as their primary livelihood. These communities have rich traditions, unique lifestyles, and a deep connection to their environment. However, their way of life, which is both labor-intensive and reliant on natural resources, is often underrepresented in mainstream media. Photography offers an opportunity to capture the essence of the fishermen’s lifestyle, highlighting their daily routines, challenges, and the cultural significance of fishing. This study explores how photography can showcase the lifestyle of fishermen in Bagwai LGA and raise awareness about their social, economic, and environmental needs.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Fishermen communities in Bagwai LGA face challenges such as overfishing, pollution, and declining fish stocks, which threaten their livelihoods and the sustainability of their practices. However, these issues are often overlooked by policymakers and the public. Photography can serve as an important tool for documenting the lifestyle and challenges of fishermen communities, shedding light on their way of life and advocating for policies that support sustainable fishing practices. This study aims to investigate how photography can be used to document and promote the lifestyle of fishermen in Bagwai LGA.
